My New Love

It was the week before Christmas. All over Innsbruck, Austria, the people were happy with anticipation. Preparing for the festival was the biggest thing that happend in the whole year.

However one young woman was not at all interested. Her boyfriend said that he didn't want to see her anymore.

Since she loved him very much, she couldn't imagine life without him. In the depths of despair, she left her home and made her way to the middle of a bridge, where she intended to jump over the guard rail into the river. When she finally reached the middle of the bridge, what she saw was a man named Kurt Allman who was dressed like Saint Nicholas, the forerunner of Santa Claus. He realized immediately what the young woman was going to do. He stopped walking and began talking to her. She explained that she had lost her boyfriend, and was thinking about suicide.

In his Saint Nicholas costume, Allman invited her to join him at a local Christmas party, "I am on my way to a party for sick children at a hospital. Would you like to come and help cheer them up?"

The young woman agreed to go to the party with him. Minutes later, Saint Nicholas was speaking to the children "I didn't come alone. I have brought a good friend with me."

The party was a great success. The young woman, who had been so desolate, was completely won over by the children. By the end of the party, a new love filled her heart. Now, she is happily working as a nurse in the children's ward of the hospital in Innsbruck.

"The children are my new love, " she said with a big smile. " I will never forget the wonderful thing that happened to me last Christmas."

新しい恋人

　あれはクリスマスの１週間前のこと。オーストリアのインスブルクの町の人は皆楽しそうであった。彼らにとって１年中で一番大きなお祭を祝うための準備をしていたからである。

　ところがひとりの若い女性はボーイフレンドから二度と会わないと言われ、とても悲しんでいた。

　彼女はその人を愛していたので、彼なしに生きることなどとてもできないと思った。絶望のうちに家を出ると川へと向かい、橋の中ほどまでやってきて、ちょうど欄干を登ろうと思ったときである。向こうからカート・オールマンという男性がやってくるのを見た。その人はサンタクロースの元祖、聖ニコラスの仮装をしていた。

　橋の上の女性になにかあったということは、オールマンさんにもすぐわかったので、足を止め話しかけた。彼女は失恋をし、自殺をしようと思ってここに来たことをオールマンさんに打ち明けた。

　仮装したオールマンさんはこう言った。「私は今、病院の子供たちのためのパーティーに行くところです。あなたもいっしょに来て子供たちを喜ばすのを手伝ってくれませんか」

　女性は賛成し、数分後に聖ニコラスは子供たちに言いました。「私は一人では来ませんでした。私の友達をつれてきたのです」

　パーティーは元気いっぱいで、終わるころには失望していた女性はすっかり変わっていた。子供たちと遊んでいると新しい愛が彼女の心の中に芽生えたのである。今では、インスブルク病院の小児科病棟で看護師としてしあわせに働いている。

　「子供たちが私の新しい恋人です。私は生まれ変わったのです。去年のクリスマスに頂いたお恵みを決して忘れはしないでしょう」彼女は微笑みながら語っていた。
