Needs of a Peaceful Society

Every object man makes is composed of parts. The perfection of each object depends upon how well the parts are made and upon how well they are put together.

A building constructed of poor materials is weak. And so is a building which, while being made of strong materials, is poorly designed.

The beauty of a statue, a painting or a musical composition is marred by defects of any of its parts or by a lack of proportion and harmony among all the parts.

Human society is also made up of parts, namely, individual men and women. Its perfection depends upon the quality of the persons who composed it and upon the relations which exist between them.

It follows that the obligation we each have to strive for perfection is more than a personal obligation. It also follows that the relations which we establish with each other must be determined by more than mere personal need or desire. The welfare of society must be considered.

The peace, progress and happiness of society demand that each individual member energetically labor for the development of his personality and that all strive to cooperate with each other in a spirit of kindness and love.

Human society should resemble a beautiful piece of music. Music is made up of large number of notes. They are combined and coordinated in such a way as to produce rhythm. That an orchestra may faithfully reproduce the beauty of a composition, it is necessary that each note be clearly sounded and that all of the notes be in harmony with each other.

社会の平和のために

　ものは何でも、いろいろな部分から成り立っている。それぞれのものの完全さは、部分がどれほどうまく作られ、また、うまく組み合わされているかにかかっている。

　粗末な材料で建てられた建物は弱い。丈夫な材料を使っても、設計がよくないなら、やはり同じ結果になる。

　彫刻、絵画、音楽なども、どこかの部分に欠陥があるとか、各部分の間に釣合いと調和がないとかによって、美しきが損なわれる。

　人間の社会もまた、部分から成り立っている。つまり、それぞれの男女によってである。人間社会の完成も、それを形造(かたちづく)っている各個人の人格と、人々の間にあるつながりによって左右される。

　従って、人格を高めることは、個人的な義務であるばかりでなく、社会全体のためにも、努力しなければならないことである。また、お互いの間にあるつながりは、単なる個人としての必要性や望み以上のものによって、作りあげられなければならない。つまり、社会全体の幸福を考えるべきなのである。

　社会の平和と発展と幸福のためには、各個人がその人格を高めるために力を尽くし、親切と愛の精神をもって、互いに力を合わせるように努力することが、必要とされる。

　人間社会は、音楽の美しい曲にたとえられる。音楽は、たくさんの数の音符からできていて、音符は、リズムを生み出すように組み合わされ、まとめられている。オーケストラが、ある曲の美しきを忠実に再現しょうとすれば、一つずつの音符をはっきりと演奏し、しかもすべての音符に互いに調和を保たせることが必要なのである。
