We Need More Parades

It was three o'clock Saturday afternoon. I was at my desk when the roll of drums and the rhythm of flutes came drifting in the window. Being curious by nature, I went outside to see what was happening.

A lively group of school children, full of pep and very talented, were marching behind three police women and two men carrying a large sign. First came five cute majorettes, with drummers and a chubby child with cymbals. Then came boys and girls with their flutes.

Walking on either side were the parents and teachers. Bringing up the rear were members of the Fire Department.

The signs, carried by the children and their escorts, told the purpose of their parade: Let's Beautify Our City; Do Away With Violence; A Happy Family Has Obedient Children; Be Kind to Old People; and Let's Prevent Fires.

Sentiments proclaimed on the placards were manifested on the faces of the children and in the tempo of their music. Spectators who lined the streets were impressed.

This new type of "demo" was concerned with the problems of our daily life. It was positive in approach, and carried on by children.

As I walked back to my office, I prayed that the sentiments which had inspired this little "demo" might never fade. We need more parades like this, I thought, as I returned to my desk.

もっとパレードが必要

　土曜日の午後３時、机に向っていた私は、太鼓の響とフルートの音に耳をとられた。本来好奇心の強い私は、外へとび出してその音を追った。

　彼らは元気にあふれた楽隊だった。３人の婦人警官と大きなプラカードをかかげた二人の男性の後には、多くの小学生が続いている。先頭は５人のかわいいバトンガール、次に太鼓が続き、その真中にはまるまる太った子供がシンバルをならしている。後には少年、少女たちのフルートの一隊が続く。

　この鼓笛隊の両側には子供たちの父や母、教師たちが歩いていた。行列の一番後には制服の消防署員がついていた。

　子供たちや保護者のかかげているプラカードには〝私たちの町をきれいにしましょう〞〝暴力を追放しょう〞〝よい家庭には素直な子供たち〞〝年よりを大切にしましょう〞〝火事をなくしましょう〞などその行列の目的がしるされている。

　プラカードに書かれた文字、その心は、子供たちの顔にも、鼓笛隊のメロディにもよくあらわれていた。沿道にならんで見ている人々も、かわいい行列が示す心に感動していた。

　これは新しい形のデモである。日常の生活に関係のある事ばかりが示されていたし、またこれはその目的に対して積極的に近づこうとする姿であり、子供たちによって行なわれたのである。

　私は事務所へもどる道すがら、このかわいいデモの目的が人々の心から消えないよう祈らずにはいられなかった。そして再び机に向って、もっともっとこうした行列が度々行なわれることが必要だと思ったのである。
