Begin - The Rest is Easy

Osamu couldn't read the characters. But he was interested in knowing what was written on the small plaque on the wall in the kitchen. His father read it for him: "Begin---The Rest Is Easy."

"What does it mean?" the little boy asked. "It means," explained the father, "that when you want to play a game and you don't know how you just jump in and get started."

Osamu took the advice to heart and it worked wonders for him---not only in playing games but in every aspect of his life. By the time I met him, he had become a very successful writer. He told me that the words on that plaque had contributed a great deal to his success as an author.

He first thought of being a writer when he was in high school. At first it was only a dream. Osamu lacked the courage to even try writing anything for publication. Then he remembered the plaque---"Begin---The Rest is Easy."

He began. He wrote several articles and sent them to several magazines. They were all turned down and Osamu was discouraged. He would have given up the idea of writing then and there if it had not been for his dad. "Sometimes the motto has to be changed a little," his father told him. "It has to be changed from "Begin---The Rest is Easy," to "Begin AGAIN---The Rest is Easy."

Osamu began again after every failure. Finally, he succeeded, and he became a famous author.

まず始めよ

　オサムは字が読めなかった。しかし、台所の壁にかけてある小さい額に書いてあることが知りたかった。「まず始めよ。あとは楽にできる」と書いてあるとお父さんが読んでくれた。

　「どういう意味なの？」と少年は尋ねた。「これはね、例えば、お前がゲームをしたいのにやり方を知らない時でも、ともかく始めなさいということだよ。そうすれば、知らなくても他の人と同じように遊べるようになる。むずかしいのは始めることだからね」とお父さんは説明した。

　オサムはこの言葉に感銘を受け、それ以来、オサムはゲームをするときだけでなく、人生のあらゆる場合にこの言葉を指針とした。私が会った時には、彼はもう有名な作家であったが、作家として成功するために、この額の言葉が非常助けになったとかたっていた。

　彼は高校生の時、初めて作家になろうと考えた。しかし、最初それは、ただ夢にすぎなかった。オサムには、何か書いてみようという勇気がなかったのである。その時、額の言葉を思い出した。
「まず始めよ。あとは楽にできる」

　彼は始めた。何篇かの小説を書くと、２、３の雑誌社へ送った。しかし、全部ボツになりオサムは落胆した。もし、父の言葉がなければ、彼はその時、書く意志を捨ててしまったかもしれない。父は言った。「モット－は、時々少し変えるべきだよ。"もう一度始めよ。あとは楽にできる"と変えたらどうだい」

　オサムは、どんなにひどい失敗の後でもまた始め、ついに成功し、有名な作家になったのである。
